An Interpretation of the Ecological Theme in Tim Winton's Shallows

  • Shallows wins Tim Winton his first of four Miles Franklin Award, and Winton rose to stardom as a young writer over a night in the Australian literary circle. The fiction focuses on the whaling chaos in Western Australia, captures the influences from outside worlds on the whaling industry, and displays the whaling town peoples' opinions on whale-killing with accuracy. The ecological theme is vividly shown through colleges of narration by joining together the log, news, slogans and scientific and technical literature. Through the description of fierce conflicts between whale killers and whale protectors, Shallows outstands as a novel featuring of environmental protection.
