Word Abbreviation and Derivation of Chinese Morpheme Meaning

  • New words via abbreviation will sometimes result in new meaning for Chinese morphemes. When abbreviated, the meaning of the original word will be condensed into a representative morpheme, and this meaning is the new morpheme meaning produced by abbreviation. The connection between old and new meanings, the characteristics for new words via abbreviation and the debut appearance of the new morpheme meaning are the standard for morpheme meaning formation via abbreviation, which is conditioned by the unique process and law and has its direct reasons in: the huge number of abbreviated words in Chinese; human cognitive metonymy; analogous mechanism in language.
