Heterogeneity of the Same Name and Homogeneity of the Different Names—On The Catalogue of Siku Quanshu's Exclusion of Legends

  • In Shaoshishanfang Bicong, Hu Yinglin put the legends(classical stories) into the category of zi, that is, novels. The Catalogue of Siku Quanshu changed legends to biography and put it into the category of history. The purpose for this change is to maintain the unified system for officially edited bibliography and to be different from opera. Lu Xun was incorrect in saying that The Catalogue of Siku Quanshu "excluded legends" because he ignored the phenomenon: the heterogeneity of the same name and homogeneity of the different names. On the contrary, The Catalogue of Siku Quanshu included rather than excluded legends.
