On the Translation of "Hallucinatory Realism"

  • The Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012 was awarded to Mo Yan"who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary".The media in China translated"hallucinatory realism"into"魔幻现实主义", while usually"magic realism" is translated into"魔幻现实主义"as well.There follows a heated discussion on how to translate"hallucinatory realism".This paper distinguishes"hallucinatory"and "magic"based on their meaning in dictionary.By reviewing the translation history of "magic realism"in China, then finding out the context where"hallucinatory realism"is used in previous articles, the author will comment on the several existing translating versions of"hallucinatory realism".
