On the Similarity of Translation Strategies to Ancient Chinese and Western Religious Scripture

  • From the perspective of religion, the thesis finds the similarity of strategies between the Buddhist Scripture translation in ancient China and the Bible translation in western countries. On one hand, pious religious beliefs and the reverence for Lord Buddha and God make literal translation the popular strategy and on the other hand, the purpose for spreading religious gospel makes liberal translation indispensable strategy. In religious scripture translation, it's not the separation but the perfect combination of literal and liberal translation strategies that gives birth to translated masterpieces.
