Textual Research on the New Interrogative Words in Zen Buddhism Quotation of Tang and Song Dynasties

  • Interrogative words in Zen Buddhism quotation of Tang and Song Dynasties are mostly new interrogative words, except that a few descended from ancient and mediaeval times. The distinctive new interrogative words are "zuomesheng", "zensheng", "zenmesheng", "zenmeyang", "a'nali"and"nail", which express inquiries. "Zuomesheng"is used as subject, predicate, adverbial to inquire things, reasons, methods and conditions; "zensheng"is used to inquire things, methods, conditions and reasons; "zenmesheng"to inquire things, methods and conditions; "zenmeyang"to inquire conditions; "a'nali"to inquire locations; and "nail"to inquire locations and ask in retort.
