Depression and Mania——Psychoanalysis on Brett Ashley's Character

The Sun Also Rises established Hemingway's fame in literature. Its literary figure Brett Ashley has long been discussed heatedly in the academia at home and abroad. There is a considerable diversity of views held by scholars. This paper employs Freudian methods of psychoanalysis to examine Ashley's occasional depression and mania, reveals the root of her weird behavior and further uncovers author's implicit writing purpose of this novel.
