A Review of Studies on Wu Zetian and Shangguan Wan'er's Poems in the Last 100 Years

  • Wu Zetian and Shangguan Wan'er were key poetesses in the poetry Parnassus of the early Tang Dynasty. They attached importance to poetry composition and made high literary accomplishments. Due to their privileged status, the measures they advocated and implemented exerted great influence on the development of Tang poetry. While their political achievements have long been studied in the academia, their literary accomplishments were neglected. Fortunately, in recent decades, studies on their poems have progressed much and received a powerful impetus. These studies do not only fill the research gap but also have achieved remarkable results. Therefore, an overall review on the studies is required to look forward to prospects for future research.
