On the Culture of "Filial Piety" in Yu, Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties

  • As Mencius said "Yao and Shun govern the countries with filial piety", filial piety became a good tradition in China since then. Historical documents indicate that filial piety began in Yao and Shun Dynasties, loyalty prevailed in Xia Dynasty, piety prevailed in Shang Dynasty, and filial piety tradition was preliminarily formed in Zhou Dynasty. All these were the sources of Confucius' systemic filial piety theory—one of the core Confucius theories as was commented by Mencius.
