On Harmonious Literary Theory in Wenxin Diaolong

  • Wenxin Diaolong contains abundant thoughts of harmony. The harmony mainly encompasses nine aspects: harmony of writer's body and soul, of writing motivation and emotion, of theme and rhetoric, of structures, of language, of styles, of rhetoric devices, of literary grace, and of rhyme. These harmonious thoughts manifested Liu Xie's pursuit of harmony, which was greatly influenced by the state of "TAI HE" and the ideology of "SHANG ZHONG" in The Book of Change. The harmonious concept in Wenxin Diaolong also has aesthetic implication. It succeeded predecessors' statements on harmony, exerting great influence over the later generations. These harmony theories and their practice reflect the value orientation of national features and aesthetic psychology in ancient Chinese.
