On Zhao Yun

  • Though Zhao Yun was not the greatest hero in history, he was a glorious figure in Romance of Three Kingdoms written by Luo Guanzhong. First, Zhao Yun was the bravest general in the forces which is exaggerated according to the historical records; next, much account was used to depict his virtue; finally, ingenious arrangement highlighted him to the end of the story. Further exploration in this paper indicates that the reason for readers' preference to Zhao Yun rather than Guan Yu and Zhang Fei is Zhao Yun's incomparable moral courage.
