Abstract: LI Bai' s poems outnumber his ancient odes and accordingly LI Bai' s fame in poems shadows his publicity in ancient odes, which, in fact, is a regret to be neglected. We cannot shut our eyes for the truth that LI Bai' s ancient odes followed closely and imitated those of his foregoers, particularly SIMA Xiang-ru, YANG Xiong and JIANG Yan. However, we must admit the fact that LI Bai' s ancient odes came from and transcended the tradition with his originality, including the unique expression of ambition, emotion, homesickness, allegory, reflection on the past, brilliance in the ending. Therefore, The literary meaning, aesthetic value and social influence of his ancient odes need a further study, which is also indispensable for a systematic research of the poet, LI Bai.
