Abstract: Endo Shusaku's understanding of religion is very complicated. Although he received baptism since childhood and often joined church activities with his family, Endo Shusaku himself was not very sure of the existence of Jesus for a long time. Therefore, in the novel Silence written in his early life, we'll see the hero Rodrigo's doubt about the existence of Jesus and his suspicion of the personality of Jesus, who already knew that Judah would betray him but did not stop it and sacrificed Judah to achieve his glorious life. And during his latter life, Endo Shusaku ceased to feel confused about whether Jesus exists or not any more, and his religious thought goes to pluralism. Especially in the novel Deep River, in the name of Ootu, Endo Shusaku expresses his understanding about God very clearly, that is, "God has diverse faces.
