Abstract:
Liu Xizai, a literary critic in Qing Dynasty, is an eight-part essay writing master.A General Survey of Arts by Liu Xizai consists of six sections, of which General Survey of the Interpretation on Confucian Classics focuses on compositional arts of eight-part essays; this is a condensed treatise highly theoretical.Remained Compositions on Confucian Classics is a record of his early writings in the style of eight-part essays, through which we may know the level of Liu Xizai in this style.Though imperial examination system has since long withdrawn from the historical stage, its rational factors are referential to the Civil Service System construction today.The eight-part essay, with its highly comprehensive style, contains almost all the rhetorical techniques used in various genres of Chinese literature, which is of important reference value to the research of compositional arts.Furthermore, similar things in the British history also provide us a beneficial reference to the theory and practice of compositional arts.
