Application of Finite Element Method in Bumper Crash Simulation

  • A frontal crash model between the bumper of a car and a rigid wall was established by using software Hypermesh. ANSYS/LS-DYNA was selected as the tool to solve the crash simulation model. The dynamic response of the bump in the process of collision was studied, and the crashworthiness of the bump was analyzed; the thickness optimization and analysis were conducted through simulation. Finally, deformation and energy absorption could be forecasted by simulation when crash happened. According to the simulation results the crashworthiness of the bump was forecasted. This method provides the basis for the design of vehicle bumpers.
