Abstract: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has a large number of nationalities, beautiful scenic spots and huge tourism potential. Tourism development can not only highlights the cultural characteristics and natural environmental value of all parts of Guangxi, but also promotes the economic development and social progress of poor areas. It is very important to objectively evaluate the tourism potential of Guangxi with scientific methods for the future development. This paper constructs a tourism potential evaluation index system covering six aspects: tourism development, tourism resources, comprehensive development environment, tourism potential value, tourism industry and local economic development trend, as well as 32 sub-indexes. Such a system is used to evaluate the tourism potential of 14 regions under the jurisdiction of Guangxi. The results show that: the tourism potential of Guilin(95.34 points) is the best in tourism potential which is far ahead of the others --13 points higher than Nanning(the second) and 20 points higher than Liuzhou(the third). The fourth, fifth and sixth are Baise, Hechi and Chongzuo, which are belong to the region with medium to high tourism potential. Beihai, Qinzhou and Yulin (the seventh to the ninth) have medium tourism potential. Laibin, Hezhou, Fangchenggang, Wuzhou and Guigang show rather weak tourism potential. In view of tourism potential development in Guangxi, the paper puts forward four suggestions: 1) to create top-quality tourism itinerary; 2) to develop three-dimensional ethnic tourism; 3) to attach importance to the role of tourism in poverty alleviation; and 4)to highlight the tourism characteristics of northwest Guangxi.
